Vet visit

Well, we sat around much of the night with America but she wasn't able to pass the second kid. So the vet came out this morning and pulled a little stillborn girl out of her and now she seems ok. It was another unfortunate experience for us (losing a baby doeling especially) but also a learning one in that we may be able to save the kid if this happens again. We've helped pull babies out before but there was always at least some little visible body part to latch on to. Going in elbow deep to find the little guy was something we weren't prepared for but our doc is great at explaining and showing us  how things should be done. We are a bit remote so if she can't get here in time at least we can try to help with this kind of situation next time. #youliveyoulearn #mininubian #dairygoats #youvegottobekidding

Weather!

Hey look, Mike set up a personal weather station for the ranch and tied in to Weather Underground for personalized forecasts. He is running a Davis Vantage View wireless for this with a logger running into a Raspberry pi and then uploading to WU. There are no other weather stations in Indian Valley so it has been hard to get accurate readings but now we will have perfect reporting of wind, rain and temp to help establish our growing seasons. #hightechredneck

Since we are finally starting to process our sheep and hogs, we thought it was time to snag one of those newfangled ".farm" domain extensions. Here is what we settled on...

New home

Zsa Zsa is getting close to farrowing so we walked her over to her new home yesterday. Here she is bragging to Jones about her new digs. #mangalitsa #gourmetpork #farrowing #bordercollies

Market

Our day started early this morning when we loaded up our herd ram and 4 lamb wethers for market. Now it's time for Moomoo to take over and add fresh genetics to our herd. In just 2 years we went from buying 4 pregnant ewes to a flock of 26! Now we'll have plenty of farm-to-table meat in the freezer too. #growyourown #farmtofork

Feeder

With all the rain and mud, we decided to make a new cleaner feeding option for the pigs. It seems to be working well. #mangalitsa #oldworldpigs #gourmetpork

Garden Goodness

Our garden is quite rough and many of the beds have been pulled and readied for spring...but we have a few that are still producing away.  It is mostly greens, with a carrot , pepper or beet here and there...but it seems to have a second wind with all of this winter rain.  We are definitely not complaining!

Nesting box

With another batch of piglets on the way, Mike has been designing a nesting box on CAD that will both keep the little guys warmer in these winter months and aid them in not getting squashed. They have a completely safe area under the lights and safe rail access along each side. The sow will also have an outdoor run to stretch and do her business and it can be picked up and moved anywhere with the forklift on the back of the tractor. Any tips or tweaks from experienced pig folk are welcome!

Rain

The ducks and geese are loving this rain but the goats and chickens long for those dry drought days.
