Fill the freezer

Fill-the-freezer day here at the ranch. Today we processed our broilers and all of the farm hatched roosters we could find. It's not exactly our favorite part of the job but knowing where our food comes from is much of why we chose this lifestyle.

Pork Loin

We picked up our pigs from the bitcher yesterday.  These animals were pasture raised and finished on apples and barley.  I decided to cook up a loin for dinner tonight.  This meat needs no gilding; just a bit of salt and pepper.

Pumpkin

We picked the pumpkin patch today and moved Eva's piglets in to clean things up. #heritagebreeds #heritageseeds

Healed up

Stinky Roger dislocated his ankle about 11 weeks ago so mike set it back in the socket and casted him up. The vet said a dislocation takes quite a bit longer to heal than a broken bone so we waited until now to check it. We cut the cast off today and it looks perfect! Not even a rub sore or hair loss. We decided to wrap it back up with fresh gauze and put the old cast back on as a sort of sandwich splint. We'll leave it on  another month or so just to be sure it's well healed before removing it for good. #nigeriandwarf #tcb

Free Range Fowl

While resting on my car or directly in front of the house isn't ideal....when you free range your fowl, it is an eventuality.

Big Boy toy

Having a "dirt mover" is going to be a big help here on the ranch.  Today Mike was able to turn the compost pile in a fraction of the time it takes us to do it by hand.  Yay for progress!

New tractor

A new toy to help us with moving and turning the compost and dirt piles. She's a 1968 Massey Ferguson 2135 with a Perkins diesel and she purrs like a kitten. #lifesizetonkatoy #playinthedirt

Turkeys

The friends and family early bird special... If you are interested in a free-range heritage breed turkey for Thanksgiving, we have seven available. They will be about 25lbs when ready and we will have them processed at a USDA facility unless you want to pick them up live. Make your reservations now for a healthy, pasture-raised bird. We have Royal Palm, Spanish Black, Red Bourbon and Eastern Wild. #thanksgiving #heritagebreeds #justlikethepilgrimsate

Cast

Our resident nigie stud and all around nice guy Roger wouldn't get up for chow this morning and when we checked him out he had what looked and felt like a dislocated ankle. Mike laid him down and popped it back in place but it came back out so we decided to treat it like a broken leg and cast it. We think we got him fixed up but will keep him alone for a few days so he can rest up and have the vet check our work the next time she's out. #nigeriandwarf #theresalwayssomething

Warty Pumpkin

We had a bit of a challenge with marking the plants this year...but this chiogga is unique enough to be unmistakeable.  I find it quite beautiful..especially its pre-rioe coloring

Tiffany's last day was yesterday so we are back to doing everything ourselves for the next month or so until the next interns come it. We thank her for all the help and wish her good luck finishing her degree! #livevicariously

Freedom

Independence Day for the pea fowl! We finally turned Watson and her 4 chicks loose from the brooder cage. They've been flying all over the place enjoying their newfound freedom. #peacocks #growyourown

Owl

We lost a half dozen hens over the last heat wave that saw temps in the hundred and teens and we even found this poor fellow in the back 40. We didn't touch him for fear of bringing some sickness back to our chickens and/or the $10,000 fine for possessing any part of a bird of prey but some coyote probably got a nice meal. #owl #heatwave

Adoption

So we have a first-freshening doe named Ginger  who was due on the 22nd. On the 25th after showing no signs of labor she started bleeding and had unsuccessful contractions for a couple hours. Then she stopped again. A few hours later we decided to help her along and found a stillborn girl pretzelled up inside her. Christy did an expert job of manipulating the fetus and getting it out. We're talking elbow deep here. Anyway, as we said, it was already gone so another lost girl, it's always a girl it seems.

Then Mike had the idea of grabbing the week-old abandoned sheep we had been bottle feeding and trying to make the best of the situation. He rubbed the birthing goo from the stillborn all over the little sheep and the doe's nose. Wouldn't you know it, they took to each other like ducks to water!

Ginger passed another stillborn girl shortly after (of course another girl) so it was a day of significant loss to the herd but at least she gets to learn to be a mother and we no longer have to bottle feed the little sheep. The two are inseparable now and both seem to be healthy. #mininubian #hairsheep #fromanuthamutha #silverlinings

New Sign

We arrived home from our trip and were greeted by this lovely homemade sign our intern Tiffany made for us.  It is from wood she found in an old pile and she carved our logo and motto into it.  It is amazing and we love it!

Snakes galore

Never seen so many snakes. We find these 5-6 footers every day. They should be fixing our rabbit problems but there are plenty of those too.

CEA negative

Good news on our boy Jones! His blood test came back clear for CEA so he (and his potential offspring) will never suffer from collie eye anomaly which is a genetic disease that causes blindness and deafness in collie breeds.

Sprinklers

One of Tiffany's duties this week was to research and implement a manifold for our new sprinkler system in the roundabout. These are the kinds of things our capable interns get to learn here at VR.
