Mitzvah

We received a deposit on Mitzvah today! He will be a herd buck up north in the Bay area.  What a lucky little guy. He just got his tattoos and hoof trimming and will be ready for his new home next week. That means we are SOLD OUT of 2014 goat kids.  :) #nigeriandwarf

Bamboo

The bamboo forest is in! We still have to mulch and put up a wire to keep the sheep out but the heavy lifting is done. This year the root system will establish and by next spring it will hopefully be thick and tall enough to completely shade the tent. The are 5 species of bamboo here from the big timber size to the smaller crooked stem, glowing yellow and beautiful black bamboo.

Miner's lettuce

Miner's lettuce saved many a 49er from scurvy here in central and northern California during the gold rush and we are covered up in it right now.

Graftification

We spent yesterday afternoon at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo at a scion exchange and grafting seminar so today tested our skills by we grafting about 16 new stone fruit varieties onto our existing trees. Now almost every tree in our orchard has a pollinator or other variety grafted onto it. #fruitsalad #backyardorchard #sheblindedmewithscions

Quiet Millie

Millie had gotten so big, we were sure she was carrying more than one lamb.  We did not however, know her due date.  We have been concentrating so much on Cover Girl that we did expect Millie to lamb first.  But she did..quietly and gracefully early this morning.  Meet our newest additions..a boy (white) and a girl.  Happy Friday!

Aerial shot

Got out the drone this afternoon to do an aerial of the bamboo grove we are putting in as Mike wants to send a photo of his paint marks to Paso Bamboo before digging starts. More on that later but in the mean time, here is a current shot of the ranch that shows the new sheep pasture and current state of greenery. All the brown is from trenching water lines to the north and west of the orchard and all the way out to the tent. #drones #hitechredneck

Pluots

We should rename the orchard Reddenbacher Hill 'cause the whole thing is popping! These are Emerald Drop pluots and all the peaches, nectarines, apricots and half the apples are flowering. #nofrostintheforecast #backyardorchard

Another goat shelter completed and ready to be installed. We painted and added a nice rubber floor mat and a mineral feeder rack to this one. #livestockarchitecture #classinguptheplace

Pack goats

Stellar is the first of our bucks to start working in our new goatpacking operation. He seems pretty comfortable with the saddle already. While smaller than full nubians, these mini-nubians are half nigerian dwarf so quite well-built and muscular with a heavier carriage for their size. #packgoats #mininubian #pullingtheirweightaroundhere

Wet paint

We went out to move the goats yesterday so we could pull their new shelters in and noticed Betsy lagging behind. Closer inspection revealed she had somehow broken her lower front leg. It looked clean and was not a compound fracture so mike put on his vet hat and casted her up while she enjoyed some grain on the milk stand. She seems to be in good spirits this morning and we will monitor her closely to make sure she doesn't need a real vet visit. #mininubian #dairygoats

Shelter

Working on some new livestock shelters with our intern, melissa. These structures will have removable sides and can be set side by side for a long lean-to shelter or face to face for a fully enclosed barn. #inventing #neccessity #ranchlife

One Happy Donkey

This year has been difficult with regard to hay prices, and frankly, the quality of that same hay. It is low in protein and our girls are finishing up the winter quite thin.  We try and combat the nutritional deficit by feeding some grain, bumping up the vitamins and mineral we feed and giving them treats that are nutritious.  We also give the girls sea kelp and a yeast powder free choice (which means it is always out there for them to snack on).  They had run out of their snack yesterday, so when I refilled the feeder, it was a happy moment for the girls.  Donkey was especially enthusiastic, and had to take a little break to clean off her chompers.

Jinx

Jinxie just can't wait to start sheepdog training. She has great instinct, eye and intensity and is balancing on the ducks already. #bordercollies #sheepdogs #herding
