Wild hogs

We took a little scouting hike to the back acreage this morning and the wild pigs are flat tearing it up going after acorns. #staytunedforbbq

Thanksgiving Blessings

Millie was our last girl yet to lamb. She surprised us today with two darling little ones; a boy and a girl.

Seeded

Yesterday we were able to get our special goat mix into the 5 acre lower pasture just in time for today's rain. #homesteading #growyourown

A boy

A new little lamb just joined the family. It's a boy. #stcroixsheep #lambingseason

Makin hay

Ok, we tilled over the weeds and got our special goat mixed consisting of oat, wheat, barley, peas, beans, and vetch. It's supposed to rain again Wednesday so Monday we plan to get our seeds in the ground and covered. #nowweremakinhay

Lamb

Just when we thought it was going to be a slow news day. Nurse Nella helps out with the new lambs. It's a girl! #stcroixsheep #Anatolianshepherds #lambingseason

Compost

After moving the girls to their new pen, we were able to pull down the old fence where they used to be and scrape about 2 years worth of old alfalfa and hay stems out for the compost pile. This isn't even all of it! We layered a little pig manure in and it is already getting hot. Now if we could just harness thus heat into a winter greenhouse we could start growing citrus around here. #compost #ruckussleepshere #oneprojectalwaysleadstoanother

Rain

Less than 2 minutes after finishing morning chores, an El Nino monsoon blew in and gave the girls their first opportunity to try out the new shelters. Our smartest goat, little Nigey Clarice, was the first to stake her claim. #nigeriandwarf #mininubian #dairygoats

Treatment

Cover Girl has had a lingering mastitis and more recent staph problem that we have been working on since her last freshening. Now that she has dried off we are trying a more aggressive treatment of injecting Spectramast up her teat nipples and massaging it into her udder for 7 days. We can't use her milk, even for her own future babies until/unless we can get her numbers down so she is on the shelf until then. She is not happy with the treatments to say the least. #mininubian #dairygoats #freeloader

Rescue

The new neighbor from SoCal had his hill flattened last weekend and brought his nice big camper van up to check it out last night. Well, he found himself buried in 5" of fresh mud this afternoon so we drove over and plucked him right out with the mighty 870. #911 #nothingrunslikeadeere

Hey look, a stork came trick or treating last night and left us something. Daisy's new girl. #stcroixsheep #lambingseason

Cover crop

After a fruitless (pun intended) year in the orchard, we decided to prep for next year by composting between the rows and planting a winter cover crop of Austrian peas and other nitrogen fixers to help improve the soil. After Ashley dumped and spread our homemade compost up and down each row, Mike came through with the tiller and mixed it all in. Now all we need is some of that El Nino rain! #backyardorchard #soilimprovement

Scout on Call

Jinx and Indiana Jones are off ranch all day at a class.  Scout took charge when the goats snuck out of the nursery.  As you can see, Pixie just won't be intimidated. ..especially if there is hay to be had.

Food plot

Just two passes with the tiller turned a rock hard field into 6" of loose topsoil for this 1/4 acre barley plot in in the back 40. Hopefully a few of those famous Monterey County wild pigs will visit it this winter and we can fill the freezer. #readyforrain #elnino

Scout

Good news, vet just called and said Lil Scouty's tongue tumor came back benign (she had a big white lump removed last Monday). As you can see, the stitches have already dissolved and it's healed over nicely. Now she can get back to her usual jobs of relentless nuisance barking, eating everyone else's dinner and terrorizing the cat. #Shelties #ranchdog

Eek

The great fall migration has begun. I saw about 7 of these little monsters crossing the road on the way home last night. #arachnophobia

Chicks

This goofy hen just decided to hatch a clutch of chicks in mid October out under the goat hotel. Now we gave to put Nella out there after night as Cotty might eat them. #freerangechickens #naturefindsaway #theyreprobablyallroosters

Plowed

Three hours with the new (to us) $250 cultivator this morning made the lower pasture ready for rain. Once the weeds come up we'll turn it over again and then plant a balanced goat hay mixture. Haven't figured out the cutting and baling part yet but we have time.

Farm bling

Drove down to Morro Bay to see John the tractor guy and picked up a couple of lightly seasoned implements just in time for winter hay. We are going to try our hand at planting the lower pasture with a special goat mix and hope for those El Nino rains they keep talking about. #3pointplays #farmbling

Farewell

Today was our intern Tiffany's last day. Thanks for all of your help and best of luck finishing up at UC Davis! #backtoworkforus

Three years ago today we closed on the ranch and became farmers! Nearly everyone we told said "I've always wanted to do that, I am totally going to live vicariously through you guys". Well, we've learned a lot and accomplished a lot since then but sometimes I miss the simple homestead we started with too. I wonder what it will look like 3 years from now. #tobecontinued #ranchlife #livevicariously
