Score again!

Score! Our neighbor was culling her 10yo Kiowa BlackBerry bushes and offered them up to us for free. These things grow shotglass size berries by the hundreds and there are about 50 plants. This load is not even half of them! #blackberries #backyardorchard

ranch lunch

one of my favorite things about having guests up to the ranch...is the meal planning.  yes, it is fun to show off the animals and listen to mike's animal husbandry tidbits--but sitting under the oaks, enjoying a nice meal and cold glass of wine makes for a great afternoon.

today we had guests up for lunch, a visit, and a long walk along the trails of the back 40.  our weather has been warm, and winter gardens are still offering up a nice vatriety of fresh vegetables....which made it easy to put this "salad' salad together.

this was our lunch...if any part looks interesting to you...and you are curious how i made it...just comment or send us a message and i will give you the deets!

Hogs

We stopped to see our pigs on the way to Portland yesterday. This is our boar's momma. We may have to rethink our fencing! When she came up to the fence and opened that big maw I am certain she could swallow a volleyball whole. #mangalitsa #ranchlife #woolypigs

Breeders

The new breeder aviary is complete and stocked. Hens are able to store sperm so we need to keep our breeders away from the other roosters for 3 weeks to make sure our eggs are fertilized by the right guy. Then, we can start collecting the eggs to incubate and hatch. Here Coppy our black copper maran rooster fends off Lester the jersey giant via an intimidating display. We have black copper, olive egger and easter egger hens in with him so we hope to hatch chicks that will offer up dark chocolate, dark olive and regular olive colored eggs from this bunch. #farmgenetics #ranchlife #backyardchickens

Posted

Sorry, but the sign did say no solicitors...

early winter jack-o-lantern

i was keeping a few pumpkins in the greenhouse.  as long as they stayed firm, i was hanging on to them...for late season pie making.  the other day, i used two of them as a door stop for the greenhouse door.
unfortunately, the chickens saw it as an opportunity to do some pumpkin carving.  by the time i noticed what was happening, this was what they designed
those chickens have quite a sense of humor!

Our trademarked slogan is finally official!

Meet Cotton!

Meet the new help! Bertha (we are gonna call her Cotton) is the newest member of our family. A friend of ours is downsizing and this friendly little 1yo 100lb pure Great Pyrenees lost her flock. We will put her on duty with Rizzo for a few weeks to learn the ropes and then figure out where she fits in best. Ruckus has already taken quite a shine to her. #livestockguardiandogs #puppylove
