Finally got a measurable dose of rain this week. First since March or April. #crazyskies #ranchlife

Death from above... Almost.

Guineas making a racket outside, peacocks strutting by the window with their necks puffed up, hens clucking up a storm, dogs agitated... Finally put on some shoes and went out to investigate and found a hawk in the tree above the house. It took off when it saw me and all 3 of the anatolians chased after it for 100 yards across the ranch growling with hackles high. I knew they'd be good against the coyotes but I never thought they'd be so on top of keeping an eye on the sky. Impressive showing by all parties! #naturalalarmsystem #keepinemsafe

The Greenhouse

We are limited on space in the house, but grand on hospitality.  Which means, we needed entertaining options.  Combine that with chilly winters and super mercurial springs, and it was no surprise we agreed that we need a greenhouse.  I (xty) surprised mike by buying a greenhouse kit late one night on the internet....and mike surprised me by putting it together swiftly and masterfully.  With a stone foundation and path back to the house, it looks really good.  Soon we will be laying sod around it and the rest of the yard.

It has only been up for a few days, but we are already growing some goodies inside...and are plotting for spring.  I'm also in search for a comfy overstuffed chair to tuck into a corner where i will enjoy my morning tea and afternoon naps.

just ducky

today i cleaned up the raised beds by pulling out the dead and dying plants.  i tossed them in the compost pile. the minute i turned my back, the ducks and geese were in a feeding frenzy.  it was like piranha! as you may know, ducks like to poop while they eat.  having them feastwhile on the compost pile is a very good thing.
of course indiana jones came through to collect any errant dirt clods whipping them around the garden--thereby making himself and everyone around him a filthy mess.

Ruckus making coyotes shiver in their boots while last night's full moon rises. He and Rizzo both weighed in at 81lbs on their 7 month birthday today. #LGD #Anatolianshepherds

Piggies on the trailcam

The central coast of California is ground zero for the state's wild pig population and we even have a few coming through our place.

Town dog

Indiana Jones' first trip to town. He just about jumped out of his skin when he saw the first spandex wearing jogger go by on our walk. Here he is sitting in front of the "real" Indiana Jones' house from Crystal Skull which just happens to be right next door to our place in Pasadena. #moviehouse #bordercollies

Turken

My new pal! This little guy or gal will either be named Bernard or Laverne after a character from my all-time favorite game. First to name the game gets a homemade chocolate goat courtesy of master pastry chef Christy.  #turken #nocheating

Honey

Just pulled 5 frames of honey from the north hive. This was a short frame in a deep box so the bees built comb to fill the space. #rawhoney #beekeeping #yum
